南半球の尾羽の短い全身褐色のトウゾクカモメ類。 ■形態 雌雄同色。 全身黒褐色で、尾羽が短い。翼は初列風切と次列風切基部が白いが、大雨覆が次列風切基部の白色部を隠している。 黒い嘴は太く、虹彩も黒い。翼下面も初列風切基部は白い。 ■採餌 大型から中型の海鳥に海賊行為を行う。 ■亜種 3亜種ある。 coastal ChubutおよびSanta Cruz provinces(アルゼンチン南西部)およびフォークランド諸島で繁殖する亜種S.a.antarcticus、 Goughを含むTristan da Cunha group(南大西洋南中央部)で繁殖する亜種S.a.hamiltoni、 subantarctic and Antarctic islands of Indian and Pacific oceans: ケープホーン、アンタクチック半島、サウスジョージアおよびシェトランズおよびニュージーランドregionで繁殖する亜種S.a.lonnbergi、。 大西洋の島嶼 ■分布 coastal Antarctica, especially Ross Sea; also South Shetland and South Orkney is.
